Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil, Plaquenil Sulfate) is a drug that has been in circulation since 1955 to treat rheumatoid arthritis and malaria. In recent months there has been much conjecture over the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of patients with the coronavirus, so much so that the mere mention of the drug is akin to conspiracy in recent weeks. Clinical data has differed with some reports stating that it is effective, whilst others state that it is either non-effective or harmful. As scientific data should not be varied in such a manner, questions should arise as to the reasoning behind the differences in data. In the following I have produced clinical studies that detail the non-effectiveness in treatment of coronavirus, the effectiveness regarding treatment, some reports that are neutral regarding its potential regarding treatment and reports that are largely descriptive of the drug to provide an overview for those who may not be aware of the drug or its historical clinical use. Regarding drug description, special notice should be taken regarding side effects and side effect frequency. Information surrounding the drug details potentially severe side effects; however, it should be noted that all drugs have the potential to cause severe side effects (eg. Paracetamol overdose can cause renal failure) and as such the frequency of the side effects should be of special note. The reporting around this drug has been varied and is, in my opinion, unacceptable and has led me to question the disparity of the clinical data’s findings.
